Sonic Allotments
January - July 2021
Sonic Allotments is a series of sound pieces made with people in Teesside and the particular places outdoors that they regularly visit. Carefully curated assemblages of conversation, gardening, working and music-making tell the intimate sonic stories of community, being in nature and emerging from lockdown in the Tees Valley.
The projects were with: Barefoot Kitchen at The Orchard; Middlesborough Men’s Shed (Groundwork); George Dura – local musician and community support officer; Nicole Jackson – local yoga teacher and gong player; and Bowesfiled Primary School (Cultivate Tees Valley).
Each ‘Sonic Allotment’ piece was made through a series of visits to an outdoor place the collaborator/group connects to in the Teesside area. Through deep listening, conversation and improvised sound-making, we developed a specific interpretation of the project title, and created sonic materials to form sound pieces. The pieces were shared online and at a site-specific installation for Sonic Arts Week July 2021, @ The Auxiliary in Middlesborough.
